1. The Forum Rules have undergone some minor changes and updates.  Please take the time to read them; it will only take a couple of minutes of your time. By doing so, you lessen the chance of incurring the wrath of the moderation team or making yourself look foolish to other members.

90% of users posting adverts in the Sales forums need to be reminded to read the rules as their posts are wrong.  This is unnecessarily time-consuming and will no longer happen - if your advert doesn't follow the Sales Rules it will be deleted and you'll have to start all over again.

  3. Dear members,

Our membership (like our country) consists of people from all walks of life; different in far more ways than can be listed here and each with a different view based on their experience of life - regardless of their colour, religion or cultural heritage. Every single person in the UK has been born of mixed race – we are a multi-coloured and multi-cultural country.

As many of you are aware there are a handful of individuals amongst this membership that persist in making provocative, inflammatory, racist and otherwise offensive comments. This has been happening across the forum to a certain degree but is most especially prevalent in the Adult section.

The moderation team has tried to stay on top of this, however unfortunately because of the ‘offensive’ nature of much of its content we don’t monitor the Adult section quite as much as perhaps we should. As a result much of this behaviour has gone unnoticed unless it has been reported to us. While the team always intended to take a "light touch" approach to the Adult section it would seem that some people aren’t quite adult enough to be left unmonitored after all.

This behaviour is, and always has been against Forum Rules as well as the specific stipulations of the Adults forum and it will no longer be tolerated. We feel it's time to draw a line in the sand and as such from this point onward offenders will receive an immediate and permanent ban from the forum.

In order for us to achieve our goal of restoring the forum to the friendly and tolerant place it once was, we ask that ALL members be mindful of the content they post and help us to stop unacceptable behaviour by using the 'Report' tool at the bottom of any offending post - the results of which can be seen only by Admin/Moderators.

You should all receive a copy of this message by PM.

I’m very much enjoying my pistols and would love to try 10m shooting

What’s a good beginners pistol? I’ve been told the Hw40 is good or the P17

    Thank you

IME the P17 is all over the place in terms of quality - shredded seals, dodgy sears and generally poor QC.

The HW40 on the other hand is entirely unpretentious but about as good-value as you'll get for an entry level target pistol.

Clearly it won't match the top-end offerings in terms of ergonomics, quality of manufacture, refinement etc, but for a mostly-placcy plinker it punches well above its weight considering that it costs about 10% of a high-end equivalent :)

you won't go far wrong with a gamo compact, about £100 s/h. Cracking little pistol.

As above the Gamo Compact is a great starting point.
Then you will catch the bug and …….

I must say, I’m after one that isn’t a PCP as I don’t want to have to buy a bottle for it.

I've had a P17 and I did enjoy it. Seal's can go but they are easy to replace. Moved onto a HW45 with custom grips made by a member on here, it's very nice. Worth considering IMO.

An HW40 or a Gamo Compact would be a good place to start.
They would both be easy to move on if you want to upgrade to something more specialised or you decide pistol shooting isn't for you.

    Cheers

HW40 out the box has the nicer trigger and you can use 2 handed should you wish

Gamo compact needs a trigger mod - longer screw for sears - but has better 10m ergonomics

    Flip a coin

I'd go with the HW40. When you're shooting into the 90's you could consider a dedicated 10m pistol. You can't buy points with a fancy gun!

I had a Gamo Compact with all the usual mods done to it, and it was a fantastically capable pistol - I now have a HW40 (and others....) and the HW40 is streets ahead of the Gamo Compact just because of its trigger

Buy a HW40 and a few quids worth of Sugru to build up the grip a bit and you have a formidable 10m pistol - I'm not even going to put it down as being entry level, find a clean second hand one (I got mine for £60 and spent £15 to get some replacement fibre elements for the sights) add £10-15 for Sugru

It's horses for courses really, see if you can try a Gamo Compact and a HW40, both very accurate and capable in the right hands as long as the shooter is doing their bit, and both can be moved along quickly if you decide 10 M is not for you or you want to upgrade. But both are quite different in handling hence me suggesting you try them both out before you spend, neither will disappoint you.

Gamo Compact trigger is not as bad as people say )) at least compared to 1377. Yes, it is heavier than any match pistol, but to my humble opinion it is just right when you consider to shoot "normal" center-fire as well

I find my P17 in a .177 will hit the 17cm target happily at 30 yards. Grouping at that distance is rubbish but for a pistol with just a red dot site on it I thought was pretty acceptable.

Gamo Compact. Highly recommended and a cheap introduction into the discipline before shelling out the big money.

The p17 as a shooting experience is as good as the hw40. I have had both and i firmly believe its better value. However in the spirit of only having the best I now have the hw40. My nephew has the p17 and on performance and trigger its as good. Looking at the finish the hw40 has the edge but the p17 is wonderful value for money.

Plus one for the p17. I never had any issues with mine and I had it for about a year and used it regularly.
